About Lincoln Conservation Lands

The Lincoln Conservation Lands consist of several interconnected natural preserves, parks, and conservation sites located in and around the city of Lincoln, Nebraska. These lands protect a variety of ecosystems such as native tallgrass prairies, riparian corridors, wetlands, and bottomland forests. Covering over 7,000 acres, the area serves as both wildlife habitat and a recreational resource. Historically, these lands were part of the vast prairie that once dominated Nebraska before agricultural development transformed much of the state. The conservation lands have been preserved and restored to support native flora and fauna, including species like the Greater Prairie-Chicken, white-tailed deer, and numerous migratory birds. Key landmarks within the conservation lands include the Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area, Holmes Lake Park, and Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center. Visitors can enjoy activities that range from hiking and mountain biking on over 30 miles of trails to kayaking and fishing in Holmes Lake and other water bodies. Seasonal bird watching and interpretive programs provide educational value. The lands serve as a vital green buffer for urban Lincoln and provide an opportunity for city residents and visitors to experience Nebraska's natural heritage. The mix of prairies, woodland, and lakes supports a wide range of outdoor pursuits throughout the year. The conservation efforts are managed through partnerships involving the City of Lincoln, the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District, and local conservation organizations aimed at protecting biodiversity and enhancing public access.
